At Crosscause, we’ve always believed in doing as much as we can with the resources we have—but every now and then, an opportunity comes along that’s simply too good to refuse. One such moment came recently, when we were offered an extraordinary donation from the HSE in Wexford: a consignment of medical equipment equivalent to the contents of a small hospital.

For a charity of our size, this kind of donation is usually beyond our reach—too large to manage and too heavy to transport. But we knew we couldn’t let this one slip away. Hospitals in Ghana, especially rural ones, are often under-resourced, and we’ve seen firsthand how much need there is. So we said yes.

And then we got to work.

Over several days, multiple teams of volunteers were mobilised. We coordinated the loading in Wexford, organised transport with several lorries, and then reloaded and repacked everything into the appropriate shipping container here. It was a massive effort, and every favour we were owed was called in—but it was worth every second.

What was donated?
The donation included:

  • Heavy-duty hospital beds -Extremely heavy
  • Hospital mattresses
  • Medical-grade fridges
  • Hospital screens and dividers
  • Chairs and benches for waiting areas

This is the kind of equipment that many hospitals in Ghana can only dream of. We’ve visited dozens over the years and have often been overwhelmed by the lack of basic infrastructure. This donation is not just equipment—it’s dignity, comfort, and improved care for patients who desperately need it.

Where is it going?
The container is now on its way to Ghana, expected to arrive around mid-June. Once it lands, all the equipment will be handed over to our long-time healthcare partner, Sister Evelyn, the director of Mother Ecclesia Community Hospital—located right next to our Xorladi project, the home for abandoned children.

Sister Evelyn has been a cornerstone of our work in Ghana for over five years. She’s not only deeply dedicated to our shared mission but also incredibly focused on the real, everyday needs of local people. One of her biggest dreams has always been to open a proper maternity department, a service badly needed in her region.

After knocking on countless doors for funding and managing to get the new maternity building constructed, there was still one big hurdle left: furnishing and equipping it. You can imagine her reaction when Conor called to say that Crosscause would be able to help her finally bring that dream to life.

Looking ahead
This kind of donation reminds us that big change is possible—especially when people come together. We are incredibly grateful to the HSE Wexford for their generosity, and to all the volunteers and supporters who helped make the impossible possible.

Stay tuned for updates when the container arrives, and we begin setting up the new maternity department. With your support, we’re not just shipping equipment—we’re delivering hope.
