At Crosscause, we believe that no one should be forgotten—especially those who’ve already suffered so much. Recently, we were contacted by Nelson, a dedicated local representative of a leprosy-affected community in Ghana. This small community of 48 adults—many with children—had once received support from a charity that helped them build a settlement and find safety. But that help had dried up. Funding stopped. The world moved on. And they were left behind.
These are people who were cured of leprosy years ago. They’re no longer sick or infectious, but the scars remain—both physical and social. In Ghana, deep-rooted stigma means that even after a full recovery, people affected by leprosy are often excluded from society. They’re not offered jobs. They’re not welcome in markets. Even handmade products they try to sell are rejected just because of who made them.
When Nelson explained the reality of the community’s situation—living in isolation, unable to work, and struggling daily with hunger—we knew we had to act. After careful review and a visit to assess their living conditions, we made a commitment: Crosscause would provide monthly food support to every member of the community.
So far, we’ve already completed two food deliveries with the help of our fantastic volunteers. The welcome we receive each time is truly heartwarming—especially from the children, whose smiles and laughter are a powerful reminder of why this work matters.
Now, on the first day of every month, our team in Ghana arrives with food for all 48 villagers. Each care package is exactly the same—ensuring dignity and fairness—and includes:
- 10kg of rice
- A few loaves of bread
- Canned goods like tomatoes and beans
- Essential hygiene items such as soap and toilet paper
The total cost to feed the entire village for one month is €1,000. It’s a small price to pay to restore dignity and meet a basic human need.
Nelson has been a great help in keeping the project organised and ensuring no one is left behind. As well as coordinating food distribution, he advocates for the community—regularly asking for help with small but important repairs to houses and shared spaces to keep the village safe and in good condition.
This new project is just one of many Crosscause initiatives across West Africa, always focused on reaching the most vulnerable. Whether it’s helping children with disabilities or equipping single mothers with sewing machines, our mission remains the same: to stand beside those who have no one else.
We’re proud to be part of this community’s story—and we’re not stopping here. With your continued support, we can do even more.
