We are five months in to our project to prevent school abandonment and we are really pleased with the progress we’ve made.
We are working with 14 children who are currently in their final year at the village school. At the end of the school year they will take national exams in Romanian and Maths and their results determine which high school (if at all) they get a place in. We are offering weekly free tuition in these two subjects to give them a better chance of passing the exams and thus getting a place in High School. We are also offering them group therapy sessions to help them prepare for the transition from village school to town school plus we have been working with their parents to explain the importance of education.
We are also sponsoring nine teenagers to continue high school/University. These teenagers are from disadvantaged families and would be unable to continue their education without our support. We pay their transport/accomodation costs, supply them with school books and uniform plus offer them monthly group counselling to help resolve any problems they might face. These teenagers all show their appreciation by giving up a few hours a week of their spare time to volunteer in one of our projects.
Thanks to our dedicated teachers as well as our partners in this project, Fundatia Vodafone Romania and Fundatia de Sprijin Comunitar.
