Xorladi Project:
Transforming Tragedy into Hope for Abandoned Children
A Dream Fulfilled
In March 2022, the Xorladi Project became a reality—a sanctuary for children who were once neglected, disabled, and stigmatized by their communities in Ghana. This home offers a safe, loving environment where these children can live without fear and find joy and hope for the future.
The project’s name carries a powerful message of compassion and resilience, inspired by a little girl called Xorladi. Abandoned at a hospital after being ostracized by her village, Xorladi’s short life sparked a profound mission. Though she passed away too soon, her story is the foundation of a home that now transforms lives.
The Journey to Hope
The Xorladi Project was born out of a chance meeting in Ghana and the relentless determination of Crosscause volunteers. While renovating a hospital in Dzodze, our founder, Conor Hughes, met Xorladi. Her tragic story—ostracized due to superstition and illness—moved him deeply. With the help of dedicated caregivers, she experienced love and dignity in her final weeks.
This pivotal moment led us to partner with the “Mater Ecclesiae” Sisters, a Ghanaian order with land and a shared dream of creating a home for displaced children. Supported by donations from individuals, the Toma Trust in Cork, and the Italian charity Noipeloro, construction began despite the challenges of COVID. By March 2022, the first phase was completed, and the Xorladi Project opened its doors.
Building a Brighter Future
The Xorladi Project is more than just a home—it’s a community. Our facilities include:
- Accommodation Homes: Providing shelter and care for abandoned children.
- Community Centre: A hub for therapy, education, and social activities.
- Sustainable Infrastructure: Built with donations and equipped with locally sourced materials.
Crosscause funds the ongoing costs of running this project, ensuring these children grow up with the opportunities they need to thrive.
A Note from Conor Hughes
“Xorladi’s story changed my life. Her strength inspired me to take action, and with the help of our amazing volunteers and donors, we’ve built something truly special. This project proves that even in the face of tragedy, love and compassion can triumph. Thank you for being part of this journey.”
