Transforming tragedy into hope for abandoned children

What is the Xorladi Project?

The Xorladi Project is a Crosscause charity initiative supporting a home in Ghana that cares for over 30 abandoned children, many of whom have disabilities. This home provides them with shelter, food, education, and medical care in a safe and loving environment.

As the project continues to grow, we are ready to open our doors to even more children in need. With ongoing support, we can expand our reach, ensuring that more vulnerable children find safety, care, and hope for a brighter future.

Who Are Our Children?

Our children primarily come from two backgrounds:

  1. Orphaned and Abandoned: Many of our children have lost their parents and, with no willing or capable relatives to care for them, have been left without support. Without intervention, these children faced uncertain and often dire futures.
  2. Children with Disabilities: In certain communities, disabilities are misunderstood and stigmatized. Some of our children were rejected by their villages, viewed as burdens due to their physical or mental challenges. Tragically, a few were even rescued from situations where their lives were at risk, as they were perceived as “cursed” because of their conditions.

The Xorladi Project is a Crosscause charity initiative dedicated to providing a safe and loving home for over 30 abandoned children in Ghana, many of whom have disabilities. It stands as a place of hope for children who were once neglected, stigmatized, or left without care.

The Story Behind Xorladi

The project is named after Xorladi, a little girl who was abandoned at a hospital after being rejected by her village due to superstition. Despite the care and love she received in her final weeks, she passed away too soon. Her story became the driving force behind this home, ensuring that no child has to face the same fate.

How It All Began

The Xorladi Project was born from a chance meeting in Ghana when Crosscause founder Conor Hughes met Xorladi while renovating a hospital in Dzodze. Deeply moved by her story, he partnered with the Mater Ecclesiae Sisters, who shared the vision of creating a home for abandoned children. With support from individual donors, the Tomar Trust in Cork, and the Italian charity Noiperloro, the project took shape. Despite the challenges of COVID, construction was completed, and in March 2022, the Xorladi Project opened its doors.

A Growing Home

More than just a shelter, the Xorladi Project is a community. It provides:

  • Accommodation Homes – A safe and nurturing space where children can grow up with care and stability.
  • Community Centre – A hub for therapy, education, and social activities.
  • Distribution Centre – A storage and logistics point for donations, supplying local communities and outreach villages.

As the project continues to grow, we are ready to welcome more children in need. With ongoing support, we can expand our reach, giving more vulnerable children the chance for a brighter future.

A Note from Conor Hughes

“Xorladi’s story changed my life. Her strength inspired me to take action, and with the help of our amazing volunteers and donors, we’ve built something truly special. This project proves that even in the face of tragedy, love and compassion can triumph. Thank you for being part of this journey.”
